EDU-SYRIA project granted 214 new bachelor’s degree scholarships for Syrian refugees to study at Zarqa University for the second semester 2019/2020. The registration for the scholarships started on 23/1/2020 and ended on 7/2/202, with 1388 registered applicants at the scholarship portal http://edu-sys.eu/ . After the end of the registration period, 284 eligible applicants were interviewed on Thursday 13 and 20 February 2020, only 214 of the applicants fit the criteria, explained below. EDU-SYRIA organized 2 information sessions at Al-Zaatari and Al-Azraq camps on 2 and 5 February 2020, to introduce Syrian refugee youth to the Bachelor’s scholarships provided by the program. These sessions were hosted by Relief International and in collaboration with UNHCR. They aimed to ease the scholarship registration process for the applicants from the camps, as a team from the registration department at Zarqa University were present and studied the applications and gave for the accepted students a document of “initial acceptance at Zarqa university”. The project celebrates the power of football to overcome the barriers and build bridges between Syrian refugees and Jordanian host communities. Prof. Manar Fayyad, EDU-SYRIA Project Director and President of the German Jordanian University, signed the grant agreement for an extension on EDU-SYRIA II Program (VET & Higher Education Programme for vulnerable Syrian youth and disadvantaged youth from host communities (EDU-SYRIA II)) on June 23rd, 2019. Zarqa, Jordan, On Thursday 23 May 2019, EDU-Syria Project organized an Iftar banquet for 250 students affiliated with the Program. The Iftar banquet took place at Zarqa University in the presence of the German Jordanian University President Prof. Manar Fayyad, and representatives of the EU Delegation to Jordan. The Chairman of the University’s Board of Directors and the President of Zarqa University also attended the event.
