EDU-SYRIA Participate in EU event about the Syrian refugee crisis

Brussels, Belgium. On June 19th 2018, EDU-SYRIA team took part in an event hosted by the EU in Brussels entitled “Europe’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis: delivering effective aid in partnership with the region” to address successes and challenges in the delivery of help to people affected by the crisis and to explore ways to better include them when designing and implementing aid programmes.

During the event, Maram Melsi represented EDU-SYRIA Students and participated in a Panel discussion moderated by Mr. Nadim Koarkutli, the Manager of the EU regional trust fund “Madad” in response to the Syrian crisis, on how it is best to include people affected by the crisis in the delivery of assistance.

Maram said in the panel, from her own experience, that refugees face many difficulties to pursue their higher education and obtaining a scholarship.

She explained that the greatest difficulty that withholds refugees from pursuing their higher education is they cannot afford university tuitions, especially males when they have to support their families.

“Refugees face many difficulties; one difficulty is that the scholarships number is substantially less than the number of students”. She also stressed the need for English language preparation courses for students starting their studies.

Melsi is a Syrian student in Zarqa University (ZU) under EDU-SYRIA program. With the help of her colleague Hamza Faouri, also a student of EDU-SYRIA in ZU, created a YouTube channel to explain medical courses to her fellow colleagues.
