Launch of the First Cohort of the Social Work Training Program: Mental Health and Community Work at the German Jordanian University
EDU-SYRIA Scholarship Program, funded by the EU and managed by the German Jordanian University (GJU), proudly launched the first cohort of the social work training program “Mental Health and Community Work” under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Aladdin Al-Halhouli, the President of GJU. In collaboration with the Consultation and Training Centre, the School of Applied Humanities and Social Sciences (SAHSS) officially launched this program on January 11, 2025.
This program, accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, aims to promote mental health awareness and prevention. It equips practitioners, researchers, and community workers with essential skills, offering a comprehensive understanding of mental health issues within cultural and community contexts.
The program, designed by GJU experts, targets Ministry of Education teachers and offers 46 full scholarships distributed as follows: 33 scholarships for female participants and 13 for male participants, with 44 scholarships awarded to Jordanians and 2 to Syrians. The recipients’ educational levels include 19 in primary education, 20 in secondary education, and 7 in preschool education. The program combines theoretical and practical training through 15 accredited credit hours, with a focus on communities in Na’ur and Madaba.
Prof. Haytham Al-Thawabih, Dean of SAHSS, and Dr. Bader Al-Madi, Head of the Social Work Department, emphasized the program’s quality and its alignment with local needs. The EDU-SYRIA Program, led by Dr. Dhiah Abou Tair, Program Manager, and Mr. Fawaz Al-Saqqar, Program Coordinator, supported the initiative by providing scholarships and training. in the program was launched in collaboration with GIZ, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in fostering educational opportunities in Jordan.
Prof. Dr. Al-Halhouli expressed his gratitude to all supporting institutions, including the EDU-SYRIA Program, and acknowledged the efforts of the faculty and organizers for the successful launch.
This programme is expected to be a new milestone in the series of programme achievements serving both Syrian refugees and Jordanians from the local community.
It is worth noting that EDU-SYRIA Scholarship Programme is a humanitarian project funded by the EU to improve the livelihood options of Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian youths in Jordan through having access to higher and vocational education and improved their employability.
