His Excellency President Frank-Walter Steinmeier Visits German Jordanian University and Meets EDU-SYRIA Students

Amman, Jordan – His Excellency the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, visited the German Jordanian University (GJU) as part of his official engagements in Jordan, where he met with the EDU-SYRIA project team and a group of students benefiting from the program.

During the visit, President Steinmeier was introduced to the EDU-SYRIA initiative, a flagship higher education program supported by the European Union and implemented by GJU in partnership with national and international institutions. The project aims to expand access to quality higher education for refugee and vulnerable youth, empowering them through academic opportunities and skills development.

The President received a comprehensive briefing by Dr. Dhiah el Diehn I. Abou-Tair, EDU-SYRIA project manager, on the project’s objectives and its impact in supporting refugee students by enabling access to accredited higher education programs and fostering long-term resilience through education.

A highlight of the visit was an engaging interactive discussion between President Steinmeier and a group of EDU-SYRIA students and alumni. The students shared their personal journeys within the program, reflecting on the challenges they have overcome, their academic and personal achievements, and their aspirations for the future. The conversation showcased inspiring success stories and emphasized the transformative role of education in rebuilding lives and creating new opportunities.

President Steinmeier commended the efforts of the university and its partners in advancing inclusive education and reaffirmed the importance of international cooperation in supporting refugee communities through sustainable, education-based solutions.
