EDU-SYRIA Program at GJU Recognized by Syrian Minister of Higher Education for Empowering Syrian Youth
On 14 October 2025 The Syrian Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Marwan Al-Halabi, praised the pioneering role of the EDU-SYRIA Scholarship Programme, funded by the European Union (EU) and managed by the German Jordanian University (GJU), in enabling Syrian refugees to continue their higher education during the ongoing refugee crisis.
During his visit to the university, Dr. Al-Halabi met with its President, Prof. Alaa Al-Din Al-Halhouli, Mr. Adrian Fernandez Dickmanns, a representative from the EU Delegation to Jordan, and the EDU-SYRIA project team. He also engaged with a group of Syrian students benefiting from the program, listening to their experiences and responding to their questions.
Dr. Al-Halabi emphasized that education is a key driver for development and reconstruction in Syria. He highlighted the importance of technical and vocational disciplines in the coming phase and the need to enhance the quality of graduates. He expressed his deep appreciation for EDU-SYRIA’s efforts in supporting Syrian students academically and professionally.
Prof. Al-Halhouli welcomed the visiting delegation and noted that EDU-SYRIA is one of the most prominent EU-funded educational initiatives, aimed at empowering Syrian refugees and Jordanian beneficiaries through higher education and vocational training opportunities.
Dr. Dhiah Abou Tair, EDU-SYRIA Scholarship Manager, pointed out that since its inception, the program has awarded over 4,500 scholarships, with around 3,850 students having graduated. This initiative has significantly contributed to building youth capacities, preparing them for the labor market, and improving their livelihoods.
