
EDU-SYRIA III Celebrates Milestone Achievements at Closing Ceremony
Amman, Jordan – [May 22, 2025] – The German Jordanian University (GJU) proudly hosted the closing ceremony of the EDU-SYRIA III project, marking the conclusion of a landmark chapter in a transformative scholarship program funded by the European Union (EU). The event was attended by distinguished guests, including Ms. Wieke Waterschoot, Representative of the EU Ambassador to Jordan, ambassadors, partners, and student beneficiaries.
Launched in 2015, the EDU-SYRIA program has been dedicated to empowering Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian youth through education. With a total budget of €37.6 million, including €15 million for EDU-SYRIA III alone, EDU-SYRIA project has provided 4,560 degree and non-degree scholarships, significantly enhancing access to higher education and skills training across Jordan.
EDU-SYRIA III, which commenced in June 2020, has offered a diverse range of academic and training programs. Its degree programs included the Graduate Studies Scholarship Program (GSSP), the Bachelor Scholarship Program (BSP), the Vocational Educational Scholarship Program (VESP), and the Teacher Certificate Scholarship Program (TCSP). In addition to these, the project also implemented several non-degree programs, such as the Labor Market-Oriented Course Program (LMP), the Entrepreneurship Training Scholarship Program (ETSP), the Bottlenecks Alleviation Program (BAP), and the High School Summer Program (HSSP).
Throughout its implementation, EDU-SYRIA III has achieved significant impact, awarding 377 vocational training scholarships, 567 bachelor’s degree scholarships, 133 master’s degree scholarships, and 181 teaching certification scholarships. Furthermore, it provided 409 labor market training opportunities, supported 43 entrepreneurial teams involving 119 individuals, and reached 826 beneficiaries through academic support programs.
Beneficiaries include 71% Syrian and 29% Jordanian students, with 51% female and 49% male representation. To date, 2,941 graduates are now actively contributing to their communities and economies.
“The EDU-SYRIA program is more than just a scholarship—it’s a force for positive change,” said the GJU director during the ceremony. “It is a lighthouse of hope in times of crisis, equipping students with tools to rebuild their futures and inspire transformation across the region.”
The ceremony concluded with expressions of deep appreciation to the European Union and the EU Regional Trust Fund – Madad for their vision, trust, and unwavering support. While EDU-SYRIA III comes to a close, its legacy continues through the lives of its graduates and the communities they now serve.
