The German Jordanian University Launches the Professional Training Program: Mental Health and Community Work.

The School of Applied Humanities and Social Sciences at the German Jordanian University has launched the Social Work Professional Training Program in: Mental Health and Community Work, accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, in collaboration with the University’s Consultation and Training Center and the Syrian Education Program (EDU-SYRIA) funded by the European Union.

This program aims to enhance awareness of mental health and its prevention among practitioners, organizations, and communities, provide practitioners, researchers, and community workers with knowledge and skills related to mental health, and offer an in-depth perspective on mental health issues in the context of culture and diversity.

Prof. Dr.Alaa’aldeen Alhalhouli, President of the German Jordanian University, explained that this program is the result of several workshops aimed at developing programs on mental health and raising awareness about it in Jordan, with the participation of a group of experts from the Al-Hassan Council, GIZ, Médecins Sans Frontières, and members of the Social Work Department at the university. He also added that this program is part of the university’s role in community service in line with the concept of social responsibility.

Prof. Dr. Haytham Althawabieh added that this program will enable its participants to work on community mental health projects, provide opportunities to identify organizations that play potential roles in mental health work, and enable them to deal with refugees who suffer from harsh conditions that severely impact their mental well-being.

Dr. Dhiah Abou-Tair, Director of the Syrian Education Project, clarified that the project will provide scholarships for the program targeting Jordanian teachers working in the Ministry of Education schools that teach Jordanian students and Syrian refugees, in addition to Syrian refugee teaching assistants, through access to higher and vocational education, enhancing their employment opportunities. Other target groups will be addressed in future courses, focusing on empowering them to deal with individuals who need recovery after facing crises and psychological stress.
